Belgrade’s bypass highway is a motorway belt being built around Serbian capital. In size and significance it is one of the most important infrastructure projects in the country.
The main route of European Corridor 10 was intersecting Belgrade’s metropolitan area, creating significant traffic problems and congestion on the inner city road network. The idea was to alleviate traffic problems by moving transit away from urban areas onto a new bypass highway. This bypass ring will intersect all motorways leading to Belgrade, particularly E75 and E70 as the most important regional transit routes.
The bypass will be 70 km long when finished, starting from the northern point of E75 to go westward all around the city and end up in its far eastern suburbs, practically traversing entire transit away. This way it is planned to unload part of the traffic from Belgrade’s city bridges, most notably Gazela Bridge.
Its construction started in the early 90’s, but it was slowly progressing until 2006, when project was revived and intensive works started again. In 2008 works on the bypass were again halted to be reinitialized in 2011.
Bypass is organized in three main sections:
• Section A, Batajnica–Dobanovci, connecting the Belgrade-Novi Sad highway (E75) on the north and Šid–Belgrade highway on the west (E70), 10.1 km long
• Section B, Dobanovci–Bubanj Potok, connecting E70 with the southbound Belgrade-Niš highway (E75), 37.3 km long
• Section C, Bubanj Potok–Vinča–Starčevo (near Pančevo), 22 km long, crossing the Danube across a new bridge.
Section A was completed and opened in 2012. The large Batajnica interchage as part of the A sector is currently being upgraded, to be opened by the end of 2014.
Section B is partially completed and opened for use, while other part is currently under construction. It is divided into 6 sectors. The partially completed part was constructed during the 90's and those are sector 1,2 and 3 of section B. Sector 4 was partially completed in 2008 and sector 5 started construction in 2011 to be opened in 2013. The sector 6 is planned after completion of sector 5. The upgraded full-profile highway will be opened on sectors B1 and B2 in early 2015.
Section C is the least advanced part of the project, as most of the activity in construction is currently in the western and southern Belgrade. This section is planned to connect southern and eastern Belgrade intersecting highway leading towards Bulgaria and Greece and one going eastward to Romania. It is a complicated project that consists of 11 viaducts, 2 tunnels and a large 1km long bridge over Danube. The exact route is not yet decided, but it should be around 22km long. Its construction will start as soon as all sections of sector B are completed.
The total investment is estimated at EUR 543 million, with around EUR 370 million remaining. Of those, 55 million come from the EBRD, 180 from the EIB, and the remainder from the National Investment Plan.
